My Journey Back to Politecnico di Milano from Student to Speaker

Writer's picture: MireiMirei

In December 2024, I had the incredible honor of returning to Politecnico di Milano (Polimi), my alma mater, as a guest speaker. It was a full-circle moment: 10 years ago, I sat in the same classroom as a student of Design and Engineering, never imagining that one day I’d stand at the front of the class, sharing my journey with the next generation of designers.

I was invited by Professor Lucia Rampino to speak in her Design Thinking course, a class that delves into the four evolving perspectives of product design: technical, human, digital, and social. Each of these perspectives represents a unique lens for understanding and practicing design. The course features guest speakers embodying each perspective, and I was honored to represent the fourth: social design. This perspective examines how design can address sustainability and societal systems, making it a vital and impactful aspect of modern design practices.

Being selected to speak on social design is an incredible acknowledgment of the path I’ve traveled. My work has always been rooted in the belief that design is more than aesthetics or functionality; it is a powerful tool to create meaningful change, elevate craftsmanship, and connect people and cultures. From my sculptural lighting pieces that showcase Filipino handcraft to my collaborations with artisans, social design has been the cornerstone of my practice, shaping every project I undertake.

During the session, I had the privilege of sharing not just my professional journey but also the lessons I’ve learned along the way. The students were engaged and curious, asking thoughtful questions that sparked meaningful discussions. Their energy and genuine interest reminded me of my own days as a student, filled with dreams and aspirations.

A heartfelt thank you to Professors Lucia Rampino and Francesca Mattioli for inviting me to contribute to such an inspiring course. It was a true privilege to return to the university grounds and reconnect with the vibrant academic community at Polimi. To the students, thank you for your warm reception and for making this experience so memorable. Your enthusiasm and curiosity give me confidence in the bright future of design.

As I reflect on this experience, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey that brought me here and excitement for what lies ahead. Returning to Polimi not only allowed me to share my story but also to reconnect with the very foundation of my career. It’s a reminder that design is a continuous journey of learning, growth, and giving back.
